Rhodian Mercenary Coinage, Thessaly c 170 BC
Silver tetrobol currency used by Perseus to pay Cretan mercenaries
This coin was unearthed in the 1968 pot hoard of close to 3000 coins in Thessaly near Pharsalus at Sitichoro Thessaly (location listed on google map). It is believed these coins were minted to pay Cretan mercenaries for their efforts to protect Rhodes. Obverse Helios, the Sun God. Reverse features a rose with a bud. The inscription EPMIAΣ is above the rose while Z Ω is flanking the stem.
