Upon his ascension to the imperial throne at 16 he had to confront the powerful Arab Caliph Muawija who laid a naval siege to Constantinople in 674. The siege lasted 4 years and the Arab fleet withdrew after heavy losses through the first use of the famous “Greek Fire” (Υγρόν Πυρ) preventing the Muslim tide from sweeping Europe.
