Pupienus, 178 - July 29, 238 AD
Year of the Six Emperors bronze sestertius. Fourth emperor.
Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus was born in 178 and was joint Roman Emperor with Balbinus between April and July of 238, the Year of the Six Emperors. Pupienus ascended the Roman hierarchical system due to military success. He and Balbinus were chosen by the senate as co-emperors, a fact that did not set well with the Praetorian Guard. They were both assassinated by the Praetorians after only a 99 day reign. Obverse laureate, draped, cuirassed Pupienus IMP CAES M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG.
