Augustus 27 BC - 14 AD
Second of the 12 Caesars, denarius astrologically suggesting Augustus’ “divinity”.
Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus (23 September 63 BC – 19 August AD 14) ruled the Roman Empire from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. Augustus was born at Ox Heads on the Palatine Hill in Rome but grew up in Velitrae about 25 miles from Rome. His father was Octavius and his mother was Atia, daughter of Caesar's sister. Astrologers became very much in vogue in Rome. An astrologer had given a foreboding prediction to his father. However, his father decided to keep the child despite the warning. This coin depicts a Capricorn (a horned goat or Αιγόκερως) one of the astrological signs.Obverse bare headed Augustus AVGVSTVS DI[VI] F r.
