Skyros, Islands off Thessaly

Skyros is an island in the southernmost of the Sporades. It was known as The Island of the Magnetes (where the Magnetes) used to live but eventually was named Skyros. It was here that Thethis hide her son Achilles when the Greek armies were preparing to fight in Troy. Theseus died on Skyros. Dolopian pirates had established their headquarters on the island. It is thought didrachms of this type were often overstruck on Attic-weight coins of Acanthos. The AthenianGeneral Kimon expelled the Dolopians in 475 BC, retrieved Theseus’ bones returned them to Athens and incorporated the island into the Delian League. Obverse two goats back to back on either side of fig leaf, heads reverted. Reverse stellate floral pattern within square incuse.
