Probus. AD 276-282, Sol full face view
Antoninianus spread Quadrigia SOL INVICTO ("Unconquered Sun")
Probus spent his efforts in successful wars to re-establish the security of the empire’s frontiers. The Romans revered Sol (the sun) as a god, from as far back as we can trace Roman religion. Obverse Radiate Probus wearing imperial mantle and holding a eagle-tipped scepter IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG. Reverse Sol standing in a spread quadriga, raising hand and holding globe and whip SOL INVICTO.
