L. Hostilius Saserna; 48 BC
Issued under moneyer L. Hostilius Saserna during the reign of Julius Caesar about an incident in the early stages of the civil war between Caesar and Pompey. Caesar marched west to meet Pompey’s forces in Spain after taking over Rome. On his journey, he was stopped by the forces in the Greek city of Massilia, where he spent much time battling their forces. After organizing a siege by land and sea, Caesar won the battle and proceeded to Spain for a victory there as well. Obverse head of Gaul with long and disheveled hair; a carnyx is behind. Reverse Diana of Ephesus standing and holding a long spear with a stag is to the left, L. HOSTILIVS SASERNA.
