Romans would invoke the Dei Penates (household deities) with greatest frequency. Publically the Penates comprised of the ancestral gods closely linked with Vesta. The cult originated in Lavinium 19 km to the south of Rome. A popular tradition was the Lavinium Penates were the sacred objects rescued from Troy and carried by Aeneas to Italy.
