Pupienus, 178 - July 29, 238 AD
Year of the Six Emperors, denarius. Fourth emperor.
Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus was a leading member of the senatorial class and was twice consul. Pupienus ascended the Roman hierarchical system due to military success. When the Gordians were proclaimed Emperors in Africa he and Balbinus were chosen by the senate as co-emperors, a fact that did not set well with the Praetorian Guard. Due to his public austerity measures he became unpopular with the Roman mob. He and Balbinus were both assassinated by the Praetorians after only a 99 day reign. Obverse cuirassed, laureate and draped Pupienus IMP C M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG. Reverse seated Concordia, CONCORDIA AVGG.
