Solidus after the Iconoclastic dispute began.
Leo III was a dynamic Byzantine Emperor effectively governing Byzantium. Despite many achievements Leo’s reign was overshadowed by the Iconoclastic disputes that started during his tenure in 726 (first Iconoclastic Period). A bitter conflict emerged with two clear and opposing sides emerged. The Iconodules who venerated the images in icons and the Iconoclasts who opposed such veneration equating it to pagan worship.
