Andronicos I; 1183-1185 AD
Electrum El Aspron Trachy Obverse MP ΘV Reverse ANΔΡΟΝΙΚΟC
Under Andronicos’s rule byzantine power was greatly weakened and Thessalonica was destroyed by the Normans. Christ is crowning Andronicos. Beautiful portrait of emperor wearing forkshaped beard being crowned by Christ, who stands to the emperor's right. This indicates that in this case Christ is submissive to the Emperor, in that the figure on the left hand side is normally the dominant one. This is a very large philosophical deviation from normal Byzantine theology, which maintains that the Emperor gains his power on Earth from God and Christ.
